The haunting song in my dreams

Today is cool in the shade and warm in the sun. I feel tired and dull. I only hear the whispers of the leaves while I lay under a tree, waiting for sleep to take me.

The whispers become silent.

Then in a distant place, the notes of a piano starts playing. Ting, ting, ting, ting, tong tong. The tune is captivating, it doesn’t seem fit for a lullaby though, its too unsettling. It’s odd but beautiful still.

As the notes play, I start hearing the whispers of the leaves again but not just that.  The ground beneath my back falls away and without opening my eyes I recognize the sensation; I am floating. Weightless, burden-free, I float slowly away from my spot under the tree and go higher towards the warmth of the sun. There I lay limp and motionless. Completely at the mercy of this intangible cloud that carries me.  The lullaby starts getting louder as it reaches climax, the sunshine warms my heart and as soon as its filled, I feel my soul descending.

It slowly comes down, so slow that it almost feels unmoving. Then as the ocean ebbs and flows, so does the invisible cradle, rock me. Lower and lower with each sway. Until I reach the ground again and feel the mass of my body envelope me. The skin once again senses its surroundings and I reluctantly open my eyes. With a jolt realize that many hours have passed and that I need to get back to work.
