Saudade is a Portuguese word that describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing for an absent something/someone that one loves. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing will never return.

This is an excerpt from my novella, a piece where both characters feel saudade when they’re reunited after an unpleasant event.

A bout of emotion washed through her and she fell apart weeping. Evan wrapped his arms around her. Even with the strange feeling she felt knowing he wasn’t who she always thought he was she still felt safe with him and comforted.

When she regained her composure he took her face in his hands.

“Hey, everything’s going to work out. It’s going to be alright,” he assured her.

Her cheeks were damp from her tears. She sniffed and nodded, facing the ground, not quite believing him. He lifted her head to see her eyes. With his thumbs he rubbed her tears across her cheeks, then across her lips. They stared at each other, longing.

Without thinking she tapped the scar on his chin, he probably got the scar in a more sinister way than she originally thought. Nostalgia crept in as they stood close, half embracing. Suddenly his lips pressed against hers. His mouth gently caressed her sweet tongue. She hesitated for a second trying to push him away with her petite hands.

No, we can’t. He’s not my Evan, it’s not the same anymore. Too much has happened… I can’t feel this way about him. However the need in her made her feel warm and wishful. Enveloped by his comforting hold, her desire grew stronger and she threw her arms around his neck, pressing herself to his chiseled body.

She loved how big and broad he was. The fluttering in her belly became leaps of delight when he picked her up and carried her to his room, holding her effortlessly with her legs wrapped around him.

This is what she longed for since the day they met. In the back of her mind she knew this was wrong yet the passion was overpowering.

I really shouldn’t be doing this, she thought while she kissed him fervently but if she learnt anything from what had transpired; it was that everything was temporary and could change in an instant. She threw caution to the wind and followed her desires.
